About the DDX Direct Drive eXtruder for Creality

For BL Touch Users

If you are using a BL Touch, you need to print the DDX Mount for BL Touch. Use parts of this guide: 01. Mechanical Installation Of A BL Touch Levelling Sensor to know how the mount can be installed on the DDX.


What to do after finishing this guide

After completing the actions in this guide you should perform the ones from the following guide:

02. Installing DDX On Creality Ender-3

You will need :

If you use a BL Touch 3D print the DDX Mount for BL Touch model supplied in this guide.

  1. Before you strip the Ender-3 down, download and 3D print the following STL models:

    • Fixture to cut the PTFE tube.

    • In case you use a BL Touch 3D print also the DDX BL Touch mount.

    • After 3D printing the model(s) you can continue and strip the Ender-3.

    • Pre-heat the hot-end to unload the material using the printer's user interface.

    • This will heat up the hot-end so the filament can be pulled out.

    • After reaching the material target temperature,

    • release the extruder hinge

    • and pull the material out.

    • To be safe turn the printer off using the switch on the side of the power supply,

    • and remove the power chord.

  2. Cut the zip-ties that hold the main cable and PTFE tube together. Cut the zip-ties that hold the main cable and PTFE tube together. Cut the zip-ties that hold the main cable and PTFE tube together.

  3. Start the hotend removal. Use the 1.5 Hex Key Unscrew the 2 bottom screws holding the radial fan on the right hand side.

    • Store the screws in a safe place. You will need them later.

  4. Put your hand below the fan shroud to prevent it from falling into the print bed. Remove the Fan shroud.

  5. Use the 1.5 Hex Key Remove the 2 top screws that hold the radial fan on the right hand side. Gently put the radial fan away before continuing.

    • Gently put the radial fan away before continuing.

    • The fan wires are fragile. Handle them with care.

  6. Use the 2.0 Hex Key Unscrew the top screw holding the hotend cover. Unscrew the side screw holding the hotend cover.
    • Use the 2.0 Hex Key

    • Unscrew the side screw holding the hotend cover.

    • Pull the cover away from the carriage plate.

  7. Use the 2.0 Hex Key Remove the screws that hold the Axial Fan inside the cover. Remove the screws that hold the Axial Fan inside the cover.
    • Use the 2.0 Hex Key

    • Remove the screws that hold the Axial Fan inside the cover.

  8. Use the 2.0 Hex Key Finish unscrewing the Axial Fan. Gently pull it away from the cover.
    • Use the 2.0 Hex Key

    • Finish unscrewing the Axial Fan.

    • Gently pull it away from the cover.

    • Remove the screws from the holes.

  9. Press the collar on the push-fit and push the PTFE tube away from the Push-fit.
    • Press the collar on the push-fit

    • and push the PTFE tube away from the Push-fit.

  10. Use the size 10 wrench (or spanner) Release the threaded push-fit. Use your fingers to unscrew it all the way out.

    • Pull the PTFE tube from the hotend.

  11. Use the 2.0 Hex Key Unscrew the two screws that hold the hotend on the carriage plate. Gently pull the hotend away from the carriage plate.
    • Use the 2.0 Hex Key

    • Unscrew the two screws that hold the hotend on the carriage plate.

    • Gently pull the hotend away from the carriage plate.

    • The thermistor and heater cables are fragile. Handle them with care.

  12. Remove the washers from the 2 screws. Store the washers in a safe place. You will need them later. The previously saved screws, the washers, the hotend and the fans will be used during the installation of the DDX.
    • Remove the washers from the 2 screws.

    • Store the washers in a safe place. You will need them later.

Conclusion

You may now proceed to install the DDX on your Ender-3.

Don't forget you will need the DDX and the Ender-3 Adapter Set to finish the installation.
