Special Skill Required

To perform the replacement of the Heater Cartridge on the DDS for CR-10S you need to know how to operate a Soldering Iron.


Warning

Use protective gear to operate the Soldering Iron that will need to be heated up to 330°C.


You will need :

  1. The Replacement Heater Cartridge kit, contains the following elements:
    • The Replacement Heater Cartridge kit, contains the following elements:

    • 1x Heater Cartridge and cable

    • 2x Zip Tie

    • 2x Shrinking Tube 3cm

    • 1x Solder 15cm

  2. Follow steps 27 to 14 while reversing the installation of the DDS for CR-10S.

  3. After reversing the DDS for CR-10S installation you will reach a status similar to this (on step 14). To continue the repair: Remove the Silicone Sock from the Nozzle.

  4. Use the 1.5 mm Hex Key to release the Thermistor. Use the 2.0 mm Hex Key to release the Heater. Pull out both elements.
    • Use the 1.5 mm Hex Key to release the Thermistor.

    • Use the 2.0 mm Hex Key to release the Heater.

    • Pull out both elements.

  5. Remove the cables plastic cover. Slide the cover in this direction. Slide the cover in this direction.

  6. Use the Wire Cutter to cut the zip tie holding the cables. Use the Wire Cutter to cut the zip tie holding the cables.

  7. Pull the Stepper Motor and cables out of the housing. Unplug the Axial Fan Cable.
    • Pull the Stepper Motor and cables out of the housing.

    • Isolate the Heater cable.

  8. Use a Hobby Knife or scalpel to make an incision on the black shrinking tube. Peel away the black shrinking tube to expose the original cable's welding. Peel away the black shrinking tube to expose the original cable's welding.

  9. Heat the Soldering station up to 330°C to perform the soldering operations. Use a flat fire resistant material, such as metal or stone, as base to perform the following soldering operations to protect your table surface. Coat the Soldering Iron tip with a bit of solder.

    • Remove the solder from the original welding to bring the cables apart.

  10. Using the Wire Cutter, remove any excess of solder from the cable tips. The cable tips should get as straight as possible.

  11. Coat both tips of the new Heater Cable with solder. Coat both tips of the new Heater Cable with solder. Coat both tips of the new Heater Cable with solder.

  12. Dress each cable tip with a piece of shrinking tube. Dress each cable tip with a piece of shrinking tube. Dress each cable tip with a piece of shrinking tube.

  13. Coat the tip of the Soldering Iron with solder before continuing. Do not solder the Heater Cable tips together. These must be kept separated. Solder one tip first and then the other.

    • Because the cable creates a closed loop, there is no need to color match. Any pairing will work.

  14. Push the Shrinking Tubes into place. Use the Soldering Iron tip to heat up the black tubes up, down and around. Don't stop until the Shrinking Tube is pressing against the connections.

  15. Use the Wire Cutter or any other plier you have to pull the old zip tie away from the housing.

  16. 1x Zip Tie
    • 1x Zip Tie

    • 1x HotEnd with the PTFE-tube.

    • 1x Silicone Nozzle Cover.

    • 1x Cables Plastic Cover.

    • 1x DDS Housing Back.

    • 1x Repaired Cable with Stepper Motor and Fan.

  18. Place the Stepper Motor cable inside the cable groove. Orient the Stepper Motor so the white connector faces as shown in the picture. Orient the Stepper Motor so the white connector faces as shown in the picture.

  19. Connect the Axial Fan Cable. Guide the cables through the Housing grooves.

  21. Place the Radial Fan connector and the Heater Cables next to each other first. Place the Axial Fan (cooling the hotend heatsink) Cable next. Finally place the Thermistor Cable above the Heater cables.

  22. Lead the cables between both ends of the Zip Tie. Close Zip Tie around cables and over the Thermistor Connector. Firmly tighten the Zip Tie.

    • Firmly tighten the Zip Tie.

  23. Slide Cable Cover back into position. Keep the Stepper Motor cable out of the way. Slide the Cover all the way in.

  24. Cut the excess of the Zip Tie right after the lock. Cut the excess of the Zip Tie right after the lock. Cut the excess of the Zip Tie right after the lock.

  25. Place the Hot End in the housing. Insert the Heater cartridge. Insert the Thermistor.
    • Place the Hot End in the housing.

  26. Tighten the Thermistor screw. Tighten the Heater screw. Firmly tighten the Heater properly.
    • Tighten the Thermistor screw.

    • Tighten the Heater screw.

    • Firmly tighten the Heater properly.

  27. Put the Silicone Sock back on the Hot End. Put the Silicone Sock back on the Hot End.
    • Put the Silicone Sock back on the Hot End.

  28. Follow steps 14 to 27 to resume installation of the DDS for CR-10S.
